What therapy cannot do

An honest list, offered in good faith by someone who believes in it.

Therapy cannot make an unbearable situation bearable indefinitely. If your job, housing, or relationship is the injury, insight becomes a way of tolerating harm more efficiently.

Therapy cannot substitute for community. An hour a week with a paid professional is not a social life, and there is good evidence that isolation degrades outcomes regardless of the quality of the work in the room.

Therapy cannot deliver certainty about the past. Memory is reconstructive. Much of the work involves building a coherent enough story to live with, not an evidentially perfect one.

What it can do is considerable: change how you relate to what happened, widen the gap between feeling and action, and give you the experience of being fully known by someone who does not leave. That is not everything. It is a great deal.
